Winter Fat Biking!
Everything you need to know about riding a fat bike in the winter!
What is a fat bike? What is it like to ride one? Well, it’s just like riding a bike! Just the tires, are, well, HUGE! This provides numerous advantages, mainly allowing riders to stay up on top of semi-soft surfaces, such as snow and snow groomed for nordic skiing, or fatbiking! We are lucky in the Tetons with lots of great places to ride a fat bike thanks to some great organizations who carry out grooming operations. Thanks to all who donate to make this possible as well. Check out JHNordic, Friends of Pathways, or TVTAP Idaho for resources on where to ride, or stop by the shop to chat! We offer rentals, sales, and repairs on fat bikes.
There are lots of different styles of riding for fat bikes, here are a few:
-Casual cruising for fresh air and great views and moving your body! 1-5 miles on wide, groomed, road like trails. Cache Creek, Emily Stevens, and Teton Canyon come to mind. Get out and spin!
-Fitness distance riding for exercise and movement. 5-20 miles. Cache Creek, Teton Canyon, Granite Hot Springs, Togwotee Pass, and others offer some longer options.
-Singletrack shredding – more like mountain biking, but on all SMOOTH TRAILS! Traction is the name of the game here. Think LOW tire pressure for grip. Cache Creek Hagen or Game Creek Trail in Jackson, WY, and the Mike Harris/South Valley network in Victor, ID are great options to get your MTB fix. If the skiing isn’t calling your name, it is likely that these trails are riding GREAT!
